Why calcium is needed in animal feed
In livestock production wholesome and correct feeding stuff is of great importance. It is necessary for the development and health of livestock thereby increasing productivity and yield. Of more than 40 mineral elements present in a livestock body 17 are considered as being indispensable for feeding the livestock – seven macroelements (Ca, P, K, Na, Cl, S, Mg) and 10 microelements (Fe, Zn, Cu, I, Mn, Co, Mo, Se, F, Cr).
Of the mineral elements present in a livestock there is most calcium (Ca); hence also higher norms of the provision thereof (doses) are necessary. This refers particularly to laying birds and highly productive cows. Calcium serves as the structural element in the skeletal and teeth composition, in cells and inter-tissue fluids, and takes part in blood coagulation and regulation of excitability of the nervous system. It is necessary for a normal activity of the skeleton, heart and smooth muscles. The activity of calcium is related closely to phosphorus and vitamin D. If a feeding stuff dose lacks calcium or phosphorus, if these elements are in an incorrect proportion or if there is deficiency of vitamin D, normal formation of bone tissue is impossible and the young animals become ill with rachitis, but the grown-ups – with osteomalacia or osteoporosis. For laying birds the laying and the strength of eggshell is reduced significantly. Lime is especially necessary for pregnant cattle, young cattle, highly productive and fast-growing cattle.
